Driving tips
- Dipped headlights are compulsory in poor visibility and recommended at all times outside built-up areas.
- Use of mobile phones while driving, even hands-free with an earpiece if it blocks both ears, is treated strictly.
- Luxembourg City has a lot of narrow, hilly streets. Larger motorhomes should use park-and-ride sites (P+R Bouillon, P+R Luxembourg-Sud) and take the free public transport into the centre.
- Public transport (bus, train, tram) is completely free nationwide. Useful if your motorhome is parked at a campsite.
- Winter tyres or all-season tyres are mandatory in winter conditions (snow, ice, slush). Not date-based but conditions-based, so carry a set if travelling November to March.
Worth knowing before you go.
The wet-weather motorway limit is strictly enforced. If it is raining, drop to 110 km/h even if the tarmac looks dry in patches. On-the-spot fines are common.
The toll system, and the city emissions rules.
- TollsNone
- VignetteNot required
- Emission zoneNone
Luxembourg motorways are completely free. There are no toll booths, no electronic tag, and no barriers. Drive straight through.
No vignette in Luxembourg. Nothing to buy before you cross the border.
Low emission zones
Luxembourg has no national low emission zone scheme. You can drive your motorhome anywhere in the country without an emissions sticker.

- Headlight Converters. Carry 1 set.
- First Aid Kit.

Documents to bring
For your own vehicle, carry your Passport, UK Photocard Driving Licence, Vehicle Log Book (V5C), Insurance Certificate and Travel Insurance Proof.

- Sunday shoppingLimited, some open morning only
Luxembourg has a limited LPG network of around 50 stations, concentrated at larger Shell, BP, and Q8 forecourts. The Luxembourg standard is the ACME fitting, which matches most refillable UK systems.
Local bottle brands are Antargaz and Primagaz, sold at supermarkets and fuel stations. You will need a matching regulator pigtail to connect them to a UK motorhome.
UK Calor bottles cannot be swapped or exchanged anywhere in Europe. Carry a 3-piece adapter kit or fit a refillable system before you leave. Read our complete guide to motorhome gas and LPG in Europe.
Electric hook-ups
Most Luxembourg campsites offer 16A hook-ups via the standard CEE blue plug, giving you about 3,600 watts to work with. Voltage is a stable 230V and reverse polarity is rare on modern sites.
Plenty of aires and small municipal sites use coin-operated or token bollards. Keep a few 1 EUR coins for short top-ups.

Where to shop
Supermarkets here: budget chains are Aldi, Lidl; mid-range chains are Cactus, Auchan, Match, Delhaize; premium chains are Smatch, Monop' (at Monoprix stations).
Typical opening hours: weekday 08:00-20:00; saturday 08:00-20:00; sunday Mostly closed (some bakeries and fuel stations open); where to buy Supermarkets.
Sunday is quiet. Plan your main shop for Friday or Saturday. A few motorway service areas have Monop' convenience shops that stay open on Sundays.
Luxembourg has famously low VAT and duty on alcohol, so supermarket wine and spirits are notably cheaper than in France, Belgium, or Germany. Locals from neighbouring countries routinely cross the border to stock up.
- Fill up with fuel before you leave Luxembourg. Petrol and diesel are typically 15-25 cents per litre cheaper than France or Germany.
- Most Luxembourgers speak French, German, and English as well as Luxembourgish. You will have no trouble being understood.
- Payment by card (contactless and chip-and-pin) is universal. Cash is less common than in France.
- The capital's old town is a UNESCO site and is best explored on foot from one of the free park-and-ride sites.

Yes. Luxembourg motorways are completely free. There is no vignette and no toll booths. Nothing to buy before you cross the border.
Is fuel really cheaper in Luxembourg?
Yes. Luxembourg has the lowest fuel duty and VAT in western Europe, which is why locals and passing drivers from Belgium, France, and Germany routinely fill up here. Diesel and petrol are typically 15 to 25 cents per litre cheaper than in neighbouring countries. If your route crosses Luxembourg, it is worth filling your main tank and any spare jerry can you carry.
Where can I park a motorhome overnight in Luxembourg?

Can I take my dog to Luxembourg in a motorhome?
Yes. Your dog needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days old, and an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) from your vet issued within 10 days of travel. For the return to the UK, a vet must administer a tapeworm treatment between 24 hours and 120 hours before you arrive back.
